Beauty is only skin deep but ugly goes clear to the bone.
Pilot tug at Astroia that leads large ships from the Pacific Ocean into the mouth of the Columbia River.
We were hiding from the 4th of July crowds at the beach but figured it would probably be safe to take just a little drive. We do a lot of this.
Crab Pots at Ilwaco
We figured most of the people would be at Seaside getting all set up in the perfect place to watch the fireworks and we’d avoid them. We were right. The ones who weren’t going to Seaside to watch the fireworks were going to Long Beach to watch those.
Oregon - Washington bridge over the Columbia River
Our first stop was across the Astoria bridge on the Washington side. The tide was way, way out. I’m guessing it was probably a minus tide this past weekend but haven’t checked the tide tables. The river is very deep on the south side but not so on the north side. Thus, you could actually see the river bed as you drove across the bridge. All we seemed to lack was a clam shovel. Well, we also would have needed a shellfish license. Neither of which we had.
Is this what is meant by dry dock?
Ilwaco is best known for its marina and charter fishing boats. This is the place to be if you’re looking for a fishing guide. However, there wasn’t much activity going on when we were there so we headed back to Astoria.
Astoria Wharf
Astoria has many restaurants on the wharf and lots of antique shops. This is the biggest little town in this area. We spent a little time walking around the quaint little town and on the dock. We had nothing planned and nothing in mind. It was just a nice day and we hadn’t been to the wharf before so we were also doing something we hadn’t done. We could have taken the town trolley but we didn’t. It’s there and others were keeping it pretty busy.
It was a gorgeous day. The next day was going to be super nice too. We were planning on taking Duchess to the beach! And, that we did.
This is what retirement and day to day RV living is all about. It’s a wonderful life.
