Yahoo! The California Border

Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.

rolling1Wednesday morning we were out of the Monaco Factory at Coburg, Oregon by 7:30 AM and headed towards the California border. The morning was eerie because the clouds were very low. Occasionally we would be in an area where the clouds were higher but then there was the other side when they were so low it was hard to see through them. Eventually, the clouds lifted and the fog was even gone. Thank goodness. It makes driving so much easier when you can actually see.

The I-5 freeway heading through the southern part of Oregon into northern California winds through the mountains and the Siskiyou Range. The road is good but after a while you get a little tired of climbing the hills and going down them. The longest grade down is only about 6% for 2 or 3 miles but there are lots of them. Terry insists he’d much rather do the Grapevine any day than this section of I-5 that seems to never stop.

We kept seeing signs to chain up. We didn’t have chains with us and didn’t see much snow. We were very thankful for that. The rest areas were all open and when traveling with Duchess we end up stopping very often. I guess that’s good for her and good for us too. Weboondocking1 met a very nice couple in the Klamath River rest stop. They just started full-timing and were so excited. They were on their way to California and then to Padre Island for the winter.

Boondocking area ----

Our first night in California was spent at the Rolling Hills Casino in the town of Corning at exit 628. This was the perfect stop. A big huge parking lot was available at the casino for boondocking or you could self-check in at the RV park. All the sites were drive thrus and $25 a night. We opted for the hookups just because we had a choice. We would have been thrilled with the parking lot too. The only problem with the RV park here was the grumpy old park host.

We signed in for the casino’s player’s card and each got $5 worth of free play. However, we were so beat we didn’t stay long and we walked away with exactly the same amount of money we walked in with. The buffet was $14.95 and after checking it out, we RollingHills1weren’t tempted at that price. Now if it had been loaded with steak or seafood, that might have been a different thing. Healthy Choice and Hell’s Kitchen was what we decided to do instead.

Rolling Hills Casino

Our original plan was to stay at the casino one more night but plans are made to be broken and that’s just what we decided to do.

Thursday morning arrived and we’re on the road again ….. it’ll be a short day.

  1. I'll be glad when we get back to the land of casinos. There just aren't many of them out here in the east and the many of the ones that are here don't allow the overnight parking. We're sure in a beautiful city park right now though.

  2. I remember when I thought $25 was expensive. After a couple months on the East Coast, I think that's cheap. We're enjoying our visit here but sure do look forward to cheap again.
